Dr. Seunggyo Jeong, INU Physics Alumnus (Class of 2011)
Dr. Seunggyo Jeong, a graduate of the Department of Physics at Incheon National University (Class of 2011), was appointed Assistant Professor in the Department of Electronic Physics at Hankuk University of Foreign Studies on September 1, 2026.
Dr. Jeong earned his bachelor’s degree from the Department of Physics at Incheon National University in 2017 under the supervision of Professor Seungryong Park and received his Ph.D. in Physics from Sungkyunkwan University in 2022 under the supervision of Professor Wooseok Choi. He subsequently worked as a postdoctoral researcher at Sungkyunkwan University under the Sejong Science Fellowship. From 2023 to August 2026, he conducted postdoctoral research in Professor Bharat Jalan’s research group at the University of Minnesota in the United States.
His primary research areas include oxide quantum materials, ultrathin films and interfaces, and the physical properties of advanced materials. He has studied quantum phenomena through materials research and various experimental techniques. More recently, his research has focused on the properties of quantum materials, including altermagnetism and epitaxial strain.
He has published research findings in international journals including Nature Nanotechnology, Physical Review Letters, Nano Letters, Science Advances, Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, Nature Communications, Advanced Science, Advanced Functional Materials, and Small. Of his 40 published papers, he served as a lead author on 20. He also received the Kim Deok-Ju Young Scientist Award from the Korean Physical Society and the Sungkyunkwan University President’s Award in 2022.
After beginning his academic research in the Department of Physics at Incheon National University, Dr. Jeong continued his research experience at institutions in Korea and the United States. He will continue his research and teaching as a faculty member in the Department of Electronic Physics at Hankuk University of Foreign Studies.
“At the Department of Physics at Incheon National University, I was able to build a strong foundation for research by learning a broad range of knowledge from basic physics to experiments and computational methods from many professors,” Professor Jeong said. “The experience I gained as an undergraduate became an important foundation for earning my Ph.D. at Sungkyunkwan University and continuing my research at institutions in Korea and abroad.”
He added, “I hope to become a professor who helps students discover the joy of physics, ask their own questions, and develop their abilities. I will also continue my research in quantum materials and altermagnetism and hope to contribute to the Department of Physics at Incheon National University as an alumnus.”
Meanwhile, graduates of the Department of Physics at Incheon National University have received faculty appointments in recent years. In September 2024, alumnus Garam Bae (Class of 2007) was appointed Professor in the Department of Physics at Dankook University, followed by alumnus Hyojung Kim (Class of 2009), who was appointed Professor in the Department of Optical Engineering at Kumoh National Institute of Technology in September 2025. With the appointment of alumnus Seunggyo Jeong (Class of 2011) as Assistant Professor in the Department of Electronic Physics at Hankuk University of Foreign Studies, alumni from the department have received faculty appointments for three consecutive years.
